Two hours flew by, and before he knew it, Rohan had voluntarily roped himself into the rest of the dayâs activities: dog walking, listening to an animated reading by Ash at Silver Pines, and playing hide-and-seek in the manor.
Jones and Janine giggled under the bed in one of the unused rooms. Rohan went to uncover them, but Duke pulled him back into the hall and whispered in his ear, âLet them think theyâve stumped us.â With enthusiasm, he called aloud, âWhere are they hiding, Ro?â
Rohan leaned against the wall next to Duke between two framed paintings of historical Greenville mayors. His arm pressed against his cousinâs, warmth soaking into him.
âThey are full of energy,â Rohan said. âJust like you.â
âMuch better behaved.â
He laughed softly, and Dukeâs lips quirked at the sides, too. Duke kept his gaze toward the opposite wall. His lashes were stunningly long in profile. âHow long have you been looking after the kids?â
âFew months.â
âAnd youâre okay with it?â
Duke shrugged, his arm shifting against Rohanâs. âI wouldnât do it if I wasnât.â
âThis Kyle isnât abusing your generosity, is he?â
âJesus, Rohan, if I didnât know better, Iâd say you have something against Kyle. You havenât even met him.â
âMaybe I should, if heâs so important to you?â How important is he?
Duke kept his voice low, blunt. âIf you want to know whether we are fucking, ask.â
The conversation was crossing a line, but Rohan couldnât stop from asking. âAre you fucking?â
Dukeâs gaze dropped briefly to Rohanâs lips. âNo. Do you fuck your beard?â
âI have.â
âDid you like it?â
âThings would be so much easier if I did.â
Duke looked away, down the hall. Called out to the kids again. âMaybe they are under my bed?â
Giggles sounded from the spare room.
Duke pushed off the wall. âKyle isnât abusing me, but I wish he would. Itâs okay though, I have a way to get his money back to him.â
Of course Duke wouldnât take their money. He didnât need it. But he cared enough to give Kyle his pride. âHow do you get it back to them?â
âI have my ways.â Duke strode into the spare room and pretended to be shocked when he uncovered the twins.
They jumped up and down, demanding more. âNope, need to pack up and run errands. And make dinner for your mommy and uncle Kyle. Itâs late.â
Rohan watched from the door. âI want to come with you.â
The twins cheered.
âYouâre not sick of us already?â Duke asked.
A fraction of uncertainty touched his voice, like he couldnât be sure how much Rohan meant it. Like he wasnât used to anyone willingly spending so much time with him.
Guilt twisted Rohanâs gut. Heâd read Duke wrong for so long. Heâd thought he wanted distance between them. Thought he hadnât cared that Rohan traveled and barely saw him.
âIâm not sick of you.â
Dukeâs expression wavered. He quickly squared it away. âWhatever. You drive, then.â
They packed the kids into the Lexus and Duke barely glanced up from his phone as he gave Rohan directions. âPost office first, then the grocery store on Fifth.
